March 11, 2022Tips and Resources to Help You Create a Fun and Accessible Backyard
So little of this world is made with neurodivergent children in mind. As a result, many children with autism, ADHD, and other forms of neurodivergence go through life feeling permanently left out and misunderstood. Building an accessible backyard for your little one is a fantastic way to ensure that there is one place where they can safely be themselves without judgment. Here’s how to get started, presented courtesy of Autism Awareness Shop.
Why Upgrade Your Yard?
An accessible backyard redesign comes with many significant benefits.
- First and foremost, an accessible backyard shows your child you understand their needs and are willing to meet them where they are.
- Children need opportunities to play, explore, and take risks at their own pace.
- Finally, a well-designed backyard can substantially boost your property value.
Sensory Play Opportunities
The outdoors provides a wonderful opportunity to engage the senses.
- All children need sensory play, but neurodivergent children particularly benefit from this type of activity.
- If your child is comfortable getting messy, consider creating a backyard mud zone.
- Work with your little one to create a sensory garden you can enjoy together.
- Use logs or stepping stones in order to create a fun opportunity for little ones to practice balance by hopping from surface to surface.
Safety Guidelines
Outdoor play stays fun when everyone stays safe.
- Design your yard in a way that is easy to navigate and remember so your child doesn’t feel lost in the space.
- Create a verbal or non-verbal signal your child can use to indicate they’re done with playtime or need to take a break and teach it to all children who play in your yard.
- Making a playhouse or other private zone in your yard can give overstimulated children a safe space to self-soothe.
Your child deserves a place where they can be themselves. Your backyard is the perfect environment for them to get to play safely and comfortably. Keep this guide on hand as you create the perfect play space for your little one!
