What it is Like Working at the Autism Awareness Shop
October 22, 2018What advice would you give parents raising a child with Autism?

- Not everyone has the same symptoms of Autism and it varies from person to person. We are all unique!
- Some people have different levels of Autism, that is why it’s called a spectrum.
- Everyone with Autism has a skill to share.
- Some people may make assumptions about someone with Autism. For example, people may think that they are not well behaved or that they can’t be smart (which is not true!).
- People with Autism may have a hard time socializing and understanding the world around them (that doesn’t mean they don’t want to be friends with you).
- Most people believe that people with Autism can’t have a steady job, do well in school, or have a family (also not true!).
- People with Autism have sensitive senses (sight, hearing, smell, taste, touch). For example, things may be too loud or things may appear too bright (this may be scary or intimidating to them).
- People with Autism can have the same interests and hobbies as people who don’t have Autism.
- People with Autism can be really skilled in the things that they like.
- You can be friends with someone who has Autism. Try to be patient with them and be respectful of their personal space. It starts with a simple hello. And be kind to them.
